Mong Kok Subdivided Flat: Air-Con Fire, Female Resident Dies of Smoke Inhalation

An air-conditioner is suspected to have started a fire in a subdivided flat on Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok one morning. Thick smoke filled the unit and a female resident was found dead.

A subdivided flat on Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok caught fire in the morning, with smoke rapidly filling the unit. A neighbour up early gaming smelled smoke, traced it to the unit, and roused his family and neighbours to evacuate. Firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly but the resident inside could not be saved.

Why subdivided flats are especially risky

Subdivided units usually share a single meter and consumer unit. The original circuit may not handle several air-conditioners running simultaneously, and the tight, sealed spaces typically lack smoke detectors or sprinklers — leaving very little time to escape. Owners should engage a licensed electrician to review loads and install smoke detectors and AFDDs.
